Newsletter 015 - August
August 31st 2024
Hi everyone! đź‘‹
Welcome to the August edition of my newsletter! I’ve decided to try a small change in this edition. I’m putting the news items and dev picks, and comic pick at the start, rather than the end. Please do let me know which you prefer!…
đź“° News items and dev picks
Here are my dev picks this month…
LINQPad is coming to MacOS! - I’m a huge huge fan of LINQPad and highly recommend it to all .NET developers. Here’s a video I did about it a few years back. The problem with this recommendation is that a lot of .NET devs use MacOS, and LINQPad is Windows only. Well, it sounds like that’s about to change!
Cursor AI - I haven’t had a chance to play with this yet (it’s high on my list!), but this is one of those things that this past week I’ve been seeing mentioned everywhere! It’s a code editor that’s designed for using with AI. And the socials are full of people saying that they’ve used it to build full apps way faster with minimal hand-written code.
Announcing .NET Aspire 8.2 – Goodbye Components, Hello Integrations! - The big change in this release is that they’ve changed the term “components” to “integrations”.
BinaryFormatter removed from .NET 9 - This has long been regarded as insecure and not recommended, so it’s good news that this is now being officially removed.
WinForms - Dark mode experimental feature - Who doesn’t love dark mode?!
Dev Comic pick of the month
I found this month’s comic pick whilst Googling for the Michael Feather’s link for this show notes of the podcast episode mentioned below. A perfect theme given the podcast episode on code refactoring…
Sponsorship opportunities
I’m looking for sponsors for both the podcast and this newsletter. Details of podcast sponsorship can be found here. Feel free to reply to this email to discuss further.
The Podcast 🎙
There were two episodes published in August.
The first was a group episode where we chatted about the Umbraco CMS. I was joined by Callum Whyte, Carl Sargunar, Carole Rennie Logan, and Lotte Pitcher. It was such a fun conversation - definitely made me want to start playing around with Umbraco! And it really highlighted how great the Umbraco community is!
And in the second episode, I was joined by Nick Cosentino to chat about code refactoring. We also chatted about the benefits of testing, and how AI might change our industry.
To be notified when the episodes drop, click subscribe in your favourite podcast app. The links can be found on the podcast website.
Also, remember that we have a Discord community for the podcast!…
My Dometrain Courses
Below are details of my Dometrain courses. There’s also a bundle that includes both courses that can be found here.
Docker for Developers
This course will teach you everything you need to know about Docker and containers. From what containers and images are; to how to build your own; to security and networking; docker-compose; and much more!
Kubernetes for Developers
Once you understand Docker, containers, images, etc - it’s time to move onto the next level and learn a container orchestrator - and Kubernetes has clearly won the battle here! My Kubernetes course is rammed-packed full of demos (pretty much all the way through), which are easy to follow along with downloadable YAML files and scripts. We start with the basics, then later move on to more advanced topics like services meshes and operators.
If you’ve made it this far into the newsletter - I’m hoping that means you’ve
both enjoyed it and found it useful. If you can help me out and share with your developer friends at work and on social media, that would be amazing!
Again - feel totally free to reach out to me, and let me know your thoughts on the newsletter. And see you back in your inbox next month for the next edition! đź‘‹
